Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India
The Global Indian International School (GIIS), Noida, invited noted social activist and Nari Shakti Puraskar Award winner, Dr. Laxmi Gautam, to spread the message of Women Empowerment as part of their Leadership Lecture Series.
Dr. Laxmi Gautam is a noted social activist and a champion for women’s causes. Her work has won her several accolades, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2015 by President Pranab Mukherjee and The Women Transforming India Award – a combined initiative of the Indian Government’s NITI Ayog and the United Nations for women “who make a difference”. In 2011 she founded Kanak Dhara, an NGO that has been working tirelessly for the cause of the widows of Vrindavan. She is also actively involved in the cleaning of the Yamuna.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Gautam stressed on the significance of ‘equal upbringing’ for boys and girls and how parents and teachers play a major role in sensitizing the male child to respect women, thereby help in shaping the future of a society which can offer women a safe, just and dignified environment to grow and flourish. She further spoke about the prevailing gender inequality in urban India and the pitiable conditions of women in rural India. Emphasising on the need of empowerment, Dr. Laxmi Gautam added, “Parents and teachers play a major role in shaping the young minds of children. I would urge them to take up the responsibility to nurture the girl child to become a responsible and confident citizen who would have an equal footing in the society regardless of her gender. I would also like to stress that self- empowerment, self-motivation and self-reliance are at the core of empowerment and this is what every member in the audience here should strive to achieve.”
“We, at GIIS, believe in all- round development of our students. The Leadership Lecture Series is a knowledge sharing platform which influences the minds of our young students as well as those of the parents and teachers, thereby enabling us to create an all-encompassing nurturing environment for our students. I am confident that Dr. Gautam’s presence today has significantly added to our course of imparting value education.” Added Mr. Rajeev Katiyal, Country Director, GIIS, India.
